Hyundai Oil Consumption Lawsuit

Hyundai Oil Consumption Lawsuit

In 2019, a class action lawsuit was filed against Hyundai and Kia alleging that certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles equipped with GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines consumed excessive amounts of oil. The lawsuit alleged that the excessive oil consumption was caused by a defect in the engines, and that this defect caused the vehicles to experience engine knocking, stalling, and even engine failure.

Allegations

The specific allegations that were made against Hyundai and Kia included:

  • That the GDI engines in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles were defective in design or manufacturing, causing them to consume excessive amounts of oil.

  • That Hyundai and Kia knew about the defect, but failed to warn consumers or take corrective action.

  • That the excessive oil consumption caused damage to the engines, leading to engine knocking, stalling, and even engine failure.

  • That consumers who purchased the affected vehicles suffered damages as a result of the defect, including the cost of repairs, lost resale value, and inconvenience.

Settlement

In 2023, Hyundai and Kia reached a $760 million settlement agreement with the plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit. The settlement agreement provides for the following:

  • Hyundai and Kia will reimburse consumers for certain costs associated with the excessive oil consumption, including the cost of repairs, lost resale value, and rental car expenses.

  • Hyundai and Kia will extend the warranty coverage for certain engine components on the affected vehicles.

  • Hyundai and Kia will implement certain changes to their engine design and manufacturing processes to prevent future oil consumption issues.
