Rudy Ornelas Lawsuit
In 2018, Rudy Ornelas, a barbershop owner in Sacramento, California, was pulled over by police for having tinted windows and a missing front license plate. The interaction between Ornelas and the police officers was filmed by a bystander and went viral. The video showed the officers escalating the situation and threatening to arrest Ornelas for refusing to get out of his car.
Ornelas filed a lawsuit against the city of Sacramento, alleging that the police officers violated his civil rights. In 2019, a federal jury found in favor of Ornelas and awarded him $1.5 million in damages.
Rudy Flores Lawsuit
In 2019, Rudy Flores, a man from Washington, D.C., filed a lawsuit against two police officers for allegedly conducting an illegal stop-and-frisk. The lawsuit alleges that the officers stopped Flores without suspicion and frisked him without probable cause. Flores is also alleging that the officers used excessive force during the encounter.
The lawsuit is still pending in federal court. The police officers have denied the allegations.
